WIKI - RUNNING GEAR

13.0 Running Gear

Transmission: Transmission cases are to be painted engine gray.

Transmission filler & drain holes were relocated to left side of case around 9/42.*

Transfer case: Transfer cases are to be painted OD.

With start of production, GPWs were equipped with an external-contracting parking brake. This was changed to an internal expanding brake around 3/13/44. **

Drive Shafts: Original universal joints are f marked.

Later production Ford front and rear drive shafts are constructed from small diameter tube (about 1-1/4”). Early rear drive shaft tubes are about 2” in diameter.

Grease Fittings: Original GPW grease fittings were S7 plated (many were painted after assembly) and incorporated an internal one-way valve. There is no ball visible at the grease inlet point.

No silicone gasket sealer should be visible on any engine or driveline components.

Deduct points for running gear that is excessively dirty, has excessive oil leaks or grease buildup.

Note: This is incorrect, ALL GPW's were fitted with the external handbrakes. Ref Jim Gilmore.
